5 New SEO Trends for 2023

Search engine optimization (SEO) has played a role in online visibility almost from the very beginning of the Internet. However, that doesn’t mean it’s static. This collection of practices has evolved a lot from what it once was and continues to do so.

Understanding current SEO trends is important for building an online presence, reaching your audience, and achieving growth. So, what’s on tap for 2023? Here are some of the most important SEO trends to understand.

Headers and Page Organization

Google rolled out its Passages search feature in 2021 and it still has a lot of impact today. This feature allows Google to highlight specific parts of a page in search results, rather than the entire page. For business owners, this means your pages must be highly organized and your headers should be tight and provide lots of context about page sections so that Google can understand the content.

Video in the SERPs

Love it or hate it, video is the single most consumed type of media online. Google is now surfacing videos in its search results, as well. For instance, if you search for “how to tie a tie”, you’re likely to find several videos highlighting how to do it in your search results. Look for this trend to accelerate, with more video content making its way into the SERPs.

Asking and Answering Questions

Google often surfaces a “People Also Ask” box for specific search queries near the top of the results page. You can tap into this by asking and answering questions in your content. You can take advantage of this in several ways, including asking questions within your page headers and including FAQ content at the bottom of the page.

The AI Conundrum

More and more companies are turning to AI tools like ChatGPT to create content. That’s a bad decision because Google’s Helpful Content update is designed to identify and then downgrade that content. The solution? Incorporate AI to speed up your process rather than reinvent it. AI should be an aide, not a content creator.
